Every type of dachshund is cute and lovable. They’re also each unique. While each individual dachshund has its own quirks and personalities, different types of dachshunds do as well. While miniature dachshunds and standard dachshunds are both dachshunds, they also have distinct differences.
Miniature dachshunds are smaller
Miniature Dachshunds are cute and curious dogs and they do have some differences between them and their larger counterparts. The average size of a Dachshund is 8 – 9 inches tall and 16 – 32 pounds. The Miniature Dachshund is 5 – 7 inches tall at the shoulders and weighs up to 11 pounds.
They were bred for slightly different purposes
All dachshunds were bred to be hunting dogs. However, miniature dachshunds were bred to be pets more often than hunters. Nevertheless, they still love being outdoors. They will run around, chase small animals and frolic in the sun and snow. They will also be happy in an apartment, as long as they are taken for regular walks and have play dates with other dogs in your building or at the park they will be incredibly happy.
Miniature dachshunds live longer
The final big difference between miniature dachshunds and standard dachshunds is their lifespan. Miniature dachshunds have an average lifespan of 13 to 16 years. Meanwhile, standard dachshunds live anywhere from 12 to 14 years. Of course, each dog is different, but in general you can expect a longer lifespan with a miniature dachshund.
